Preeclampsia, or high blood pressure in pregnancy, is the most commonly treated complication in pregnancy. Affecting between 5-8% of pregnancies, preeclampsia and other hypertensive disorders are, according to the Preeclampsia Foundation, a leading cause of maternal and foetal illness and death.

A study on Calcium supplementation in pregnancy published in March 2006 in the Medscape Medical News concluded that whilst calcium supplementation does not reduce the incidence of preeclampsia, it does reduce the severity.
